THE TOP TEN BEST MOVIES OF 2019 (Excluding Animated Movies)

It has been a great year filled with blockbuster movies and really intimate solo movies that has got Cinema-goers optimistic and so excited. A year we saw DC ‘s Joker, Captain Marvel, another Spider man movie,  the Avengers finally defeating Thanos, John Wick ruining from the High Table, Rambo going for one final revenge, Schwarzenegger with another Terminator and lots of exciting animated movies. In this article we will exclude animated movies from our list of top tens  to make it easier for us. Lets dive in.

No 10. Marriage Story

Noah Baumbach’s superb marriage story performed by Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver. A story of a couple who tears their relationship apart as they both struggle to remain whole inside. A wonderfully sweet-sad movie that is remarkably good at every scene. I fell for Scarlett after watching her in Avengers but I must confess that this is the best performance of her career. At the end of the movie, you will feel like you know them like your own family.

No 9. Alita the Battle Angel

Produced by James Cameron and directed by Robert Rodriguez. Alita is a Cyberpunk action film that tells a story of a deactivated cyborg who awakens in a new body with no memory of her past. Assisted by the good doctor (Christopher Waltz), Alita learns how to navigate her new life and later discovers clues to her past. The movie is so engaging and is filled with breathtaking action scenes.

No 8. Little Woman

Another movie written and directed by talented Greta Gerwig  after being nominated as best director for Lady Bird (2017). I doubt whether most of us have seen this movie, maybe because Samuel L Jackson didn’t feature or maybe it was not from the marvel studio. I will guarantee you will fall in love with this very passionate and absolutely great movie. It tells a story of the March sisters; four young women each determined to live life on her own terms. The movie is wonderful and everyone played their characters to perfection.

No 7. The Irishman

The Irishman makes it to number 7 on our list of 2019 top movies with topnotch performances from veteran actor Robert Di Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci. A movie directed by Academy Award Martin Scorsese that tells the story of a mob hit-man who recalls his possible involvement with the slaying of Jimmy Hoffa (Pacino). Although the movie was lengthy (typical Scorsese motif), there was not a single time wasted. Personally I think the movie should at least get its own fair share at the Oscars.

No 6. Once Upon A Time in Hollywood

Another beautiful comedy-drama film by Quentin Tarantino. A unique storyline of a faded television actor (Dicaprio) with his best friend and stunt double (Pitt) struggling to achieve fame in a Hollywood they don’t recognize anymore. I was happy to see Pitt and Dicaprio together again after Tarantino’s (”The Audition”, which was a flop in my opinion). The movie received a lot of positive critical reviews and won 3 Golden Globe with another 74 wins and 240 nominations.

No 5. Captain Marvel

The first Marvel film to be built around a female superhero with a solid supporting cast featuring Samuel L Jackson, Djimon Hounsou and Jude Law. Carol Danvers becomes one of the universe most powerful superheroes after the earth is caught in the center of a galactic war between two alien races. Loved the fighting scenes and the way Captain Marvel dominates everything on her way. It doesn’t have the much humor that is always present in Marvel movies, but is very engaging and entertaining. Grossed over $1 billion worldwide against a budget of $175 million.

No 4. Spider-Man Far From Home

In my opinion, I think Tom Holland is the best Spider-man compared to Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield. I also don’t think this movie is as good as the first ones but it’s not bad either. All I don’t like about the movie is the villain. Marvel has always kept their superheroes at the center without giving the villain more depth, which I personally don’t like although their movies are always entertaining. It is the second highest-grossing movie in marvel’s three movies of 2019, grossing over $1 billion worldwide.

No 3. Joker

I don’t know why I like this film a lot, maybe because it’s a DC film or just Phoenix’s impeccable performance, his crackling laugh and facial expression are deeply hunting. The best performance I have seen in a film so far. The film tells the story of Arthur Flex, a failed stand-up comedian who was trying to find his feet in a decaying Gotham City. It was a major box office success grossing over $1 billion worldwide against a budget of just $70 million making it the first R-rated film to do so.

No 2. Avengers Endgame

There is not really a movie you can compare with what the Marvel Studios have achieved with the Avengers, either in terms of quality and consistency or in terms of size and quality of stars. In the Avengers Endgame, the surviving members of the infinity war join forces to reverse the damage done by Thanos. The movies brought us lots of surprises like the death of two Avengers (Iron Man and Agent Romanoff), a Drunken and disoriented Thor, an old Captain America and Professor Hulk. The only problem I see in the Avengers Endgame is that it sets the bar so high that it will be difficult for any superhero film to match it (Although the final battle of the infinity war was my best moment in the Avengers series). It grossed a whopping $2.7 billion, making it the highest-grossing film of all time. A perfect conclusion to over one decade of storytelling.

No 1. John Wick 3

One of the best if not the best action movie of all time. Personally I don’t think any of John Rambo or the expendables or any of the Avengers with their superhero abilities can defeat John Wick with a pencil. I have seen Delta Force, Expendables, Avengers, Resident Evil, Rambo, Mad Max, Matrix, terminator and so many action movies but for me, John Wick comes first. John Wick, a man of focus, a man of commitment, a man of sheer-will and also a man of fashion. Imagine killing the Librarian with a book!!!! ‘’WTF’’. I mean who does that?? It’s a shame it didn’t make up to a billion dollars in the box office but it’s the kind of action film you would love the story to continue forever.
Honorable Mentions: Movies like; Terminator (The Dark Fate), Dolemite is my Name, Uncut Gems, Ford vs. Ferrari, Aladdin, Knives Out, Fast & Furious (Hobbs & Shaw), Zombieland 2, Rambo (Last Blood), Jojo Rabbit, and Pain & Glory.
